Veere

With a history going back to the 13th century, Veere certainly has stories to tell. It established itself when it became the staple port for Scotland. This trading relationship made Veere very wealthy; today, the most obvious evidence of this can be seen with such buildings as the Grote Kerk, which translates as ‘big church’, making it probably the most understated name for a building on Walcheren, as in reality it is absolutely colossal! Imagine something like Canterbury Cathedral in a village local to yourself and you get the idea. When you see this enormous building it simply looks completely out of proportion to the rest of Veere, which adds to the unique character of the place.

Today, Veere is simply beautiful place to visit, with a multitude of unique shops and cafes, making it a very popular place for tourists. Another major attraction is a the yacht harbour, which is a reminder of the historic connection Veere has with the sea that made its’ fortune.

The breathtakingly beautiful Veere Town Hall. Construction of this magnificent building began in 1474, and was completed in 1477.

Statues on the town hall, representating the lords and ladies of Veere. The ones on the front of the building shown here as actually replicas; the originals are contained inside, to protect them against weather damage. However, the replicas themselves were made in the 20th century, and are 100 years old themselves!

A row of shops in front of the Grote Kerk. The shop on the right is ‘Oma’s snoep winkel’ (Grandma’s sweet shop), that offers all sorts of sweets that would be recognisable to any Dutch person, taking them back to their childhood. In Yorkshire, this would probably be called something along the lines of ‘Ee by gum, when I were a lad’.

The Campveerse Toren, a historic building located at the harbour area at the north end of Veere, where you can cross the Veerse Meer to get a ‘Rondje Pontje’, a ferry service to Kamperland.
