Trees

Trees are a fantastic subject for photography.  I have taken a large number of photographs of trees in all sorts of situations and settings, which are displayed here. Of course, trees feature in other pages of the album, however they belong on those pages as the main subject is something else, and trees ‘just happen’ to be in the same photo. The photos of trees on this page are where the tree or trees themselves are the main subject.

So, lets sit back and enjoy one of the ultimate examples of beauty from Mother Nature!

28 December 1992, Minolta 7000, Minolta 50mm f/1.7, 1/30sec @ f/1.7, Fujichrome ISO 100.

A lone tree during a sunset.

28 December 1992, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8, 1sec @ f/2.8, Fujichrome ISO 100.

In the right place at the right time; an attractive silhouette of trees, with the appearance of the Moon an added bonus.

17 February 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8, 1/60sec @ f/4.5, Cokin Grey Graduated filter 121, Fujichrome ISO 100.

17 February 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8, 1/2sec @ f/2.8, Cokin Grey Graduated filter 120, Fujichrome ISO 100.

No, it’s not a mirror image of the photo above! It was taken on the same day, in the same general area, on Eston Hills in Middlesbrough. Of interest is that this photograph taken later on the same day, with fading light, so the exposure time is longer, with a lighter graduated filter used with the sky being darker. These things matter to photographers!

17 February 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 100-200mm f/4.5, 1/125sec @ f/4.5, Cokin Grey Graduated filter 120, Fujichrome ISO 100.

Still on the Eston Hills, a group of trees that became quite familiar to me at the time, with Middlesbrough in the background.

17 February 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 100-200mm f/4.5, 1/100sec @ f/5.6, Cokin Grey Graduated filter 120, Fujichrome ISO 100.

Another view of the same group trees in the above photo.

17 February 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 100-200mm f/4.5, 1/250sec @ f/6.7, Fujichrome ISO 100.

Sunset.

21 November 2010, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/60sec @ f/2.8, Kodachrome ISO 64.

These trees are in Albert Park in Middlesbrough. Having trees in an organised layout is quite common in parks located in towns, and looks quite attractive. This photograph is also quite personal for me, as this outing to the park to take photos was the last one ever using Kodachrome slide film.

10 January 2026, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/50sec @ f/14, ISO 100.

Another line of trees, this time in an residential setting, in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough.

10 January 2026, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/50sec @ f/9.5, ISO 100.

Same trees as above, with a different angle of view.

30 March 2024, Leica SL(601), Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/60sec @ f/8, ISO 50.

A beautiful blossom tree in Kendal, Cumbria.

30 March 2024, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/50sec @ f/3.4, ISO 50.

‘Inside’ the tree of the photo above this one.

24 May 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8 + 0.42 fisheye converter (effective focal length 12mm), 1/8sec @ f/11, Fujichrome ISO 100.

28 January 2007, Leica R6.2, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/60sec @ f/2, Kodachrome ISO 64.

Interesting sculpture in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.

10 January 2026, Leica SL(601), Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/125sec @ f/6.8, ISO 100.

Sunrise over a tree log.

10 January 2026, Leica SL(601), Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/400sec @ f/5.6, ISO 100.

Two trees cutting through early morning winter mist.

3 May 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8, 1/250sec @ f/2.8, Cokin Circular Polarizer filter 164, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

Strong sunlight behind this tree makes for a very attractive effect.

21 April 1997, Minolta 9000, Sigma 70-210mm f/2.8 apo, 1/30sec @ f/2.8, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

Another photo showing the stunning effect of sunlight behind a tree; without this, this photograph would look very ordinary.

21 April 2002, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/60sec @ f/4, Kodachrome ISO 64.

A maze of roots.

30 March 2003, Leica R6.2, Summicron 50mm f/2, 1/125sec @ f/4, Kodachrome ISO 64.

Amazing to see how trees can grow out of stone walls!

13 June 2013, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/30sec @ f/9.5, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

A lot of the trees in woodland in the North Yorkshire National Park is felled for commercial use and is a significant contributor to the local economy. Here, the logs are stacked for later collection, which I thought made for an interesting photograph.

Moving on to the bark; here we have all sorts of amazing details on show.
