A wintry scene in North Yorkshire, with Captain Cook’s Monument just visible in the distance.
Snow
With the power to transform the most mundane of scenes, snow has always been a major
asset for photography. As someone keen on landscape photography, I have always made
the most of this weather condition to add that something special. My photographs
on this page are of general landscapes and close-

Keen cyclists from North Yorkshire will recognise this as Clay Bank, a very known
hill between Stokesley and Chop Gate. At this time in my life I was taking cycling
very seriously and this hill was a regular part of my training routes. The cycling
season for road riders generally takes place between March and October, so seeing
Clay Bank like this is not something that would be very familiar to those of us from
the two-

Perfect landscape conditions for this one; the dramatic Cleveland Hills bathed in winter sunshine, with pristine snow in giving foreground interest. It is not surprising why I love going out when I can get shots like this.

On the same day as the above, this time taking in more of the Cleveland Hills. As with pretty much any landscape view, snow just adds something really unique to the whole image.

Another aspect that snow does to photography is make the images look monochrome.

A frozen sign for the Cleveland Way. Maybe wait until it is a bit warmer to do it!

Footprints in otherwise pristine snow add that something extra to this photograph.

Taken from the bridge over the A174 Parkway dual carriageway in Marton, Middlesbrough; I think the weather kept people away from what is normally a very busy road. Without snow, this photograph would be a pictorial representation of symmetry. With snow, the image is dramatically altered; the threatening sky adds to the effect to create an almost surreal, dystopian image of the future.

Footprints again, adding a nice pictorial effect to what otherwise would be a nondescript scene.

If you don’t like the winter, then you can just say the weather is rubbish, I suppose.
