Seaports

If anyone asks me what I take photographs of, I usually answer ‘landscape and wildlife’. However, as this subject shows, this really is too narrow; I enjoy taking photographs pretty much anything, as long as it might have that special ‘something’ or present some sort of challenge photographically. Seaports is one of those subjects that ‘just happened’; proof, I think, that photogenic subjects appear if you just open your eyes. I have regularly travelled to The Netherlands, taking the Hull to Europoort ferry, and realised that the view from the deck of the ship could make for an interesting subject photographically.

I have split the page up between the two ports; click on either image to go to that section of the page(or just scroll down the page in the usual way).

#Hull #Europoort

Port of Hull, North Yorkshire

A major seaport in England, with a history tracing back to the 13th century.  Today, it carries around one million passengers per year, including myself when I fancy a cycling holiday.

Europoort, Rotterdam

The largest seaport in Europe, and indeed one of the biggest seaports in the world, Europoort really is breathtaking to experience.

Right: 30 January 2025, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/25sec @ f/2.8, ISO 2500.

At first glance, these two photographs look very similar, but not really, they are like night and day(yes I have to admit that even by my standards that is quite poor).

In The Netherlands now, and looking for a parking space.

26 June 2026, Leica SL(601), Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/125sec @ f/2, exposure compensation +1 stop, ISO 100.

We’ll be setting of for Hull, once the driver finds the keys to start the thing.

A slightly different view from the above shot; note the large buildings in the background. No, they hadn’t been painted pink; just a stunning reflection from the setting Sun.

One of the locals from Rotterdam.

Beautiful late winter sunlight across the port.
