Woodland

One of the activities I enjoyed from a very early age was to explore woodland; it is likely to have been one of the things that go me into photography. There is very little to compare with the absolute beauty of thick forest, giving a sense of being one with nature. Thankfully, in England, we have an abundance of them, with my local forests located in North Yorkshire, where a lot of these photographs were taken.

20 November 2000, Leica R6.2, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1sec @ f/16, Kodachrome ISO 25.

I like the line of trees in this photo.

13 June 2013, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/30sec @ f/2.8, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

13 November 2003, Leica R6.2, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1sec @ f/11, Kodachrome ISO 64.

Cropton Forest, North Yorkshire.

A ‘typical’ forest path in North Yorkshire, but this could be any forest path, to be honest. Just looking at this is enough to feel calm. The magic of trees is on full display here.

Another quite typical scene of woodland, made spectacular with the Sun shining through the trees.

Lots of lovely greenery here!

27 May 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 50mm f/1.7, 4sec @ f/16, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

A classic woodland shot; to get this one, I used a 50mm lens, which gives a very natural perspective which is very close to what the human eye sees. As opposed to…

26 July 2025, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8, 1/60sec @ f/2.8, ISO 100.

…a photograph taken with an ultra-wide angle lens, which gives a totally different result and perspective. I am probably no more than a meter from the purple flower in front! The trees are given a towering appearance in the background. It is this sort of creativity that is one of the appealing aspects to photography.

27 May 1993, Minolta 7000, Minolta 28mm f/2.8, 1/2sec @ f/11, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

24 October 2010, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/15sec @ f/2.8, Kodachrome ISO 64.

30 December 2025, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/50sec @ f/2.8, ISO 500.

This is part of the woodland on the lower slopes of Kendal Castle, Cumbria. The shape of the trees is very appealing, along with the muted autumn/winter colours.

5 December 1999, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/2sec @ f/5.6, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

Another photograph where Mother Nature shows off her winter wardrobe.

23 October 2000, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 30sec @ f/22, Fujichrome Velvia ISO 50.

Photographing woodland can bring up various challenges - one of which is lack of light. Here, I used a shutter speed of half a minute, indicating just how dark it was.

30 March 2003, Leica R6.2, Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8, 1/125sec @ f/4.5, Kodachrome ISO 64.

Change of season now, on a sunny spring day; so now the trees cast long shadows over the path.

12 November 2003, Leica R6.2, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1sec @ f/11, Kodachrome ISO 64.

Winter Sun coming through the tree cover.

1 September 2009, Leica R6.2, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, 1/125 @ f/4.5, Kodachrome ISO 64.

26 August 2024, Leica SL(601), Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8, 1/60sec @ f/6.8, ISO 1250.

Near Flatts Lane Country Park on the outskirts of Middlesbrough. The tree on the left side here adds that ‘something’ to what would otherwise be a fairly mundane photograph.
