Squirrels

Squirrels are a common sight across pretty much the whole of England.

There are two main types; red and grey. The red squirrel is native to the UK; the much larger grey squirrel is an import from the USA, which has been quite devastating for the population of red squirrels across the UK, making these animals a rare sight. There are efforts to help save the red squirrel from extinction, and thankfully there are areas across the country where they are very much thriving. The photographs on here of the reds were taken at Shapwells Hotel in Cumbria.

From a photographic perspective, squirrels make for a fantastic subject; their quite amusing antics and remarkable tree climbing skills make for great photos.

This page displays the photographs of grey squirrels first, followed by photographs of the red squirrels; to go to the photographs of red squirrels, click here.

One of the residents of Stewart Park, a typical urban public park near to where I live. The park has an abundance of trees, so consequently has numerous squirrels residing within. The visiting public will feed these animals, so as a result, they look rather well fed!

Our furry friend here showing that if you want your bird feeders to be used by birds, significant thought has to go into making them squirrel-proof!
